Day 5: Following the Footsteps of Jesus in Galilee
Shalom again from HUSA!
Today, after a long drive north to Galilee, we visited many historical and biblical sites of Jesus' life starting with the Mount of Beatitudes. Overlooking the famous Sea of Galilee, this mount is said to be where Jesus gave the beatitudes to his disciples and the multitude. We were also given the opportunity to ride a boat on the Sea of Galilee, which was enjoyed with singing Christian songs and dancing!
We also went to two different churches: Church of the Primacy of Saint Peter, (which is located on the shore where Jesus showed himself to his disciples the third time), and the Church of the 12 Apostles, a beautiful Greek Orthodox church surrounded by nature. The last stop was the remains of part of the town of Capernaum, Jesus’ second home. This location has many archaeological sites such as one of the earliest locations where the first Christians gathered and the ruins of a synagogue that lies on top of another synagogue that dates back to the time of Jesus. This synagogue was where Jesus first gave a public sermon proclaiming that the prophecy of the “bread of life” was fulfilled through him. Because of this sermon, however, he was eventually rejected and pushed out of Capernaum. We are grateful to have been in Galilee today, where most of Jesus’ ministry took place.
